"Songs of the Shirt"

The "Song of the Shirt" evokes an emotional feeling towards the women who worked in textile factories. In it is realistic to what woman dealt with in the 1800's. It describes how these women worked for long hours and eventually become exhausted of the sewing. They lived in poverty because of the wage that they got during those times. The women felt like they were treated like slaves. They would end up working until, they couldn't feel their bodies anymore. They were disrespected by not giving them the amount of money to live on. With reading the lyrics of this song the women were sometimes starving or full of dirt. The word "work" is used to emphasize the long hours of work and the low wages that they got. And not only did the women work but children were not expected to receive an education, so at an early age they began to start working. Some were treated the same way, they worked for long hours, eventually got exhausted, and looked like they were malnutrition. Woman had to endure a lot during this days, from work they sometimes went to take care of family, and it became very tiring. These events happened everywhere around the United States.
